We are proud of our unique traditional real wood carpentry buildings. Hand built by skilled craftsman our external buildings are of the finest quality. They are very different from those stocked by the large retail chains which are just literally nailed together. Also our quoted timber sizes are actual finished sizes and not pre machined sizes.

We only use tanalised redwood for all our buildings.

Redwood and Whitewood

Redwood has a more compact tighter grain than the more commonly used whitewood. As seasons change so do the temperature and humidity of the air. This is when the wood expands and contracts causing slight changes in the woods grain. Over time this can become significant in the form of splits and cracks. Redwood has a tighter grain then whitewood and as such cracks less, weathers better and is more suited the U.K climate.

Wood Grades

We use Russian 4th's or the equivelant Swedish 5th's. 3rd's and 2nd's are typically used for bedroom furniture and 1st's are reserved for the finest of cabinets. 5ths and 6ths are generally used for garden furniture. We prefer 4th's and 5th's because this adds to the buildings beauty and maximizes the buildings life without adding too much to the cost.

Tanalising

Tanalising is the process of forcing wood treatment into wood by placing a cube of 5m x 1m x 2m into a highly pressurised vat. This forces out all the water giving the treatment no pathway but into the wood. This typically achieves 1mm of treatment penetration compared to just a thin painting of exterior treatment. Clearly this extends the life of the building considerably.

Our Joints

All our joints and frameworks are secured using the mortice and tennon system. This effectively holds the joint from both sides providing a strong, secure solid framework. All our boards are real wood not chipboard or sterling board. Joined using the tongue and groove technique providing even more strength, rigidity and storm proofing
